Krzystof wodicko. Pipiloti Rist. Lars von Trier-

The question of ‘the vehicle’

What characterises their productions?

Being outside the commercial mainstream culturally and geographically in relation to their origins. Rist and Trier- baroque rather than minimalist sensibilities. Wodicko- using digital and projection technologies to revivify the relation of "public" to their civic environments.

Does Ablab function differently depending on whether it’s projected or on screen?

Yes indeed.

"We shouldn't blame ourselves when the wonder fades, much less blame our machinery. Instead, we should come to appreciate the way that human beings give ideas their substance. We can take fantastic abstractions and personify them, make them real. We're not disembodied intellects; that was a powerful dream of the last millennium, but a new millennium is at hand now, and our machines can play that dismal role for us. Infinity and eternity are not our problems."

"The Space Age lasted barely 15 years, from Gagarin’s first flight in 1961 to the first Apollo splashdown not shown live on TV in 1975, a consequence of the public’s loss of interest. Perhaps space travel is forever doomed because it inevitably recapitulates primitive stages in the growth of our nervous systems, before the development of our sense of balance and upright posture- a forced return to infantile dependency. Only intelligent machines may one day grasp the joys of space travel, seeing the motion sculpture of the space flights as immense geometric symphonies."

"You are interested in the unknown, the mysterious, the unexplainable. That is why you are here."
